What exactly is 1680D material?
The 1680D label on tent fabric is actually a unit of density for nylon fibers. 1D represents the weight of 1 gram for 9000 meters of fiber. 1680D means that this high-density nylon yarn weighs 1680 grams per 9000 meters, approximately three times the density of ordinary umbrella fabric. This material, after being woven together, forms a cross-mesh structure similar to a bulletproof vest, and with a PU coating, it possesses both tear resistance and waterproof properties.
Why outdoor gear favors it?
Tear resistance: Can withstand the full force of an adult male tearing without breaking.
Abrasion resistance: Shows no significant wear after dragging for 500 meters on gravel.
Environmental adaptability: Maintains flexibility from -30℃ to 70℃.
Waterproof balance: 5000mm hydrostatic pressure provides protection against heavy rain while maintaining breathability.
Considerations when choosing: High density comes at the cost of weight; a 3x3 meter tent fabric weighs approximately 4.5 kg. We recommend weighing the pros and cons based on your intended use: a lower D value is preferable for multi-day hikes to reduce weight, while 1680D is better suited for fixed campsites or extreme environments.
Check the coating uniformity; high-quality products will use a heat-sealing process at the seams. For long-term storage, avoid folding to prevent damage to the coating; hanging is the ideal storage method.
